OUR STORY

SIFST was founded in 1977 as a non-profit scientific society for professionals working in food science, food technology and related fields across industry, academia and government. The Institute was registered as a Professional Society with the Registrar of Societies in May 1977. From an initial membership of just 40, SIFST has grown to a community of more than 300 members across various membership categories, including Fellows, Associates, Licentiates, Graduate Members, Student Members and Corporate Members.

Over the years, SIFST has strengthened its connections with the local and international food science community. The Institute joined the Singapore Professional Centre in 1979 and became a member of the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) in 1980. In 1989, SIFST became an affiliate organisation of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), USA, and is also a member of the Federation of Institutes of Food Science and Technology in ASEAN (FIFSTA).

SIFST has also contributed its expertise to various national and international advisory committees, technical committees and working groups related to food science, food technology, standards, accreditation and food safety. Through these engagements, the Institute continues to support knowledge exchange, professional development and the advancement of Singapore’s food science and technology community.
